Dry Spell Sparking Forest Fire In Kashmir: MeT

Srinagar: The Kashmir valley is currently contending with a prolonged dry spell, leading to a concerning escalation in fire incidents across many forests in the region over the past few days, the metrological department said.

As per the reports, forest fire incidents were reported in Karanu area of North Kashmir’s Karnah, Devpora in South Kashmir’s Shopian, Wurandore, Manzgam area of south Kashmir’s Kulgam, Kangan in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal, Salamabad in North Kashmir’s Uri, Sumlar in north Kashmir’s Bandipora, Nagawadi in south Kashmir’s Tral, Rampora Rajpora in North Kashmir’s Sopore and other places.

According to Director MeT Srinagar, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, the persistent dry weather in Kashmir is responsible for the “bushfire” incidents in Kashmir valley.

Dr Mukhtar Ahmad while addressing to media persons in Srinagar said: “Such incidents have been witnessed in the past as well.”

The vital function of Western Disturbances in the Kashmir valley is to introduce moisture to the region," he explained.

"Conversely, the worsening dry conditions stem from the lack of weather disturbances," he added.

Earlier, regarding the forest fire incidents Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, said that three reports of forest fire were received by the J&K Officials and further necessary action were initiated in this regard.

Mr Bidhuri, also assured that a special team has been activated by the administration to deal with forest fire incidents.
