Srinagar, Jan 16 — Fresh snowfall blanketed several higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley on Friday afternoon, affecting key mountain passes, as authorities issued travel advisories, including mandatory use of anti-skid chains on the Tangmarg–Gulmarg road.

Officials said Gurez Plains received around two inches of fresh snowfall, while Drass recorded nearly one inch. Zojila Pass also witnessed close to two inches of snow, impacting movement along the strategic route.

“Sadhna Pass has received between two and three inches of snowfall, which may affect vehicular movement,” an official said, adding that the fresh accumulation has strengthened the winter snowpack in higher elevations.

Popular tourist destinations also experienced snowfall, though in lighter measure. Gulmarg recorded about one centimetre of snow, while Sonamarg and Doothpathri witnessed light snowfall during the day.

A weather official said snowfall remained largely confined to higher reaches. “Lower areas of the Kashmir Valley stayed mostly cloudy, but cold conditions prevailed. Night temperatures are expected to fall further in snow-covered areas,” the official said.

Authorities advised travellers, transporters and residents in upper reaches to remain cautious, warning that fresh snow could make roads slippery, particularly on mountain passes.

Meanwhile, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Gulmarg issued an advisory mandating compulsory use of anti-skid chains for all vehicles on the Tangmarg–Gulmarg road.

“Any violation of this directive will invite strict action under the law,” the order said.

The SDM directed the Sub-Divisional Police Officer Tangmarg and the Tehsildar Tangmarg to ensure strict enforcement of the order and to maintain smooth traffic flow and law and order. The advisory will remain in force until further orders, subject to improvement in weather and road conditions.

Weather officials said further western disturbances could bring more snowfall in the coming days, affecting higher reaches and possibly the plains.
