Srinagar, Jan 6 — Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Srinagar City, Ajaz Ahmed, on Tuesday warned car dealers and shopkeepers against using city roads for business activities or long-duration parking, saying strict legal action will follow violations.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, the SSP said several car dealers were illegally displaying vehicles on roads across the city, leading to traffic congestion and inconvenience to commuters. “Roads are meant for smooth movement of traffic, not for running businesses,” he said, adding that all vehicles found displayed on roads would be lifted.

The SSP also cautioned shopkeepers, particularly in city-centre areas, against parking their vehicles outside their shops for the entire day.

He said shopkeepers must use designated parking spaces or opt for public transport. “They cannot occupy road space by parking their vehicles outside shops throughout the day,” he said.

Clarifying enforcement norms, the SSP said there is a clear distinction between shopkeepers and customers. “Shoppers can stop briefly, make purchases and move on. But shopkeepers cannot block roads or footpaths by keeping vehicles parked for long hours,” he said.

Responding to public concerns over traffic challans, the SSP clarified that challans are not issued solely on the basis of mobile phone photographs. “There is a proper procedure. In most cases, paper challans are issued on the spot after following due process,” he said.

He said the traffic police will continue strict enforcement to ensure discipline on city roads and urged the public to cooperate for smoother traffic movement in Srinagar.
