Srinagar: The Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar announced on Wednesday that they have suspended the non-local student who reportedly shared a blasphemous post depicting the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on WhatsApp, following protests by students and doctors.
“It is to inform that immediate cognisance of the matter was taken by GMC Srinagar administration. Pending inquiry, the concerned individual has been suspended with immediate effect,” said the GMC in a post on X.
“An inquiry comprising 13 HODs/HOUs has been initiated for necessary action under rules. All concerned are requested to maintain peace and tranquility on the campus,” added the GMC in the official communique.
Earlier, students of GMC Srinagar held a protest demanding action against the accused student.
The students assembled inside the campus and raised slogans against the alleged act.
Meanwhile, the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) GMC and Associated hospitals condemned the incident.
“We condemn the deplorable act of blasphemy perpetrated by an undergraduate medical student of our esteemed institution.”
The act, the RDA said, not only wounds religious sensibilities but also disturbs the social fabric and harmony, which they hold dear.
