Srinagar, Feb 5 — Security checks and frisking along the Jammu–Srinagar highway were intensified as Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to begin a three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir from Thursday.

“Vehicle checking and deployment have been stepped up at multiple points along the highway in view of the Home Minister’s movement,” a senior police officer said.

During the visit, Shah will chair a high-level security review meeting and inaugurate several development projects in both Jammu and Srinagar.

Officials said that soon after arriving in Jammu, Shah will meet Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha at Lok Niwas and later hold separate meetings with senior security officials and BJP leaders.

“On Saturday morning, the Home Minister will proceed to Srinagar to inaugurate development works,” an official said, adding that Shah is also expected to visit the Kathua border area to review the Border Security Force’s preparedness.

The visit comes against the backdrop of two consecutive encounters in Udhampur and Kishtwar on Wednesday in which three militants were killed.
