Srinagar, Apr 14 — Police on Tuesday said eight persons have been arrested and 25 others identified for alleged vandalism during a student protest in Sopore town of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, even as a case has been registered against a lecturer accused of assault by a female student.

“Eight miscreants have been arrested and 25 others identified for their involvement in vandalism during the protest. The situation was brought under control after assurances of justice were given to the protesters,” a police official said.

Senior Superintendent of Police Sopore, Iftikhar Talib, said a case has been registered against the lecturer and an investigation has been initiated based on the student’s complaint.

The protest erupted on Monday following allegations of harassment against the lecturer, triggering road blockades and incidents of stone-pelting at some locations, officials said, adding that action is being taken against those involved in disturbing public order.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has attached the accused lecturer, Ghulam Hassan Mir, a senior Urdu lecturer at Government Higher Secondary School Sopore, to Boys Higher Secondary School Badugam in Gurez, Bandipora, pending inquiry.

An official order said the Joint Director (North) has been appointed as the inquiry officer and directed to submit a report within 15 days. Officials said the attachment means the lecturer will report to the Gurez school after the period of suspension.
