Srinagar: A video showing tourists consuming alcohol publicly on a Shikara (boat) in Srinagar’s Dal Lake has gone viral, with unionists urging J&K police to take action, citing the rule of law.

In the video, locals can be seen serving food to the tourists.

JKNC spokesperson Imran Dar criticized the ‘Naya Kashmir’ narrative, saying: “Any person drinking alcohol in a public place is illegal in India. Perhaps in BJP's 'Naya Kashmir' it's legal. I request the police to book the offenders under relevant sections of the law.”

He also urged respect for the sentiments of the Muslim-majority region.

“We welcome tourists, but please respect local sensibilities,” he added.

Salman Nizami, chief spokesperson of DPAP, termed the act unacceptable, stating: “Consuming alcohol openly on a Shikara, in the land of Sufism - Kashmir, is unacceptable.”

“Such behavior spoils our culture and society. I have forwarded the clip to the concerned SDPO Nehru Park. Strict action must be taken against these tourists,” he added.

According to Section 50-A of the IPC, drinking or attempting to drink alcohol in public places, places of worship, or other places of business can result in a fine of up to ₹3,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both.

While the IPC does not explicitly prohibit public drinking, it addresses public nuisance under Section 268. Consuming alcohol in public can be deemed a public nuisance if it causes inconvenience or harm to the public.

In some states, the public consumption of alcohol may face stricter enforcement due to respect for local customs and values.
