Jammu: At least 97 families of Garkhal village in Akhnoor sub-division (along the bank of the Chenab River) of Jammu district have been shifted to safer location after the Chenab River overflowed its protection wall and inundated the village on Saturday.

Local authorities swiftly organized a large-scale rescue operation to ensure the safety of the affected individuals. The situation escalated due to heavy rainfall, exacerbating the already critical conditions caused by the overflowing river.

An official said that a massive rescue operation was launched in the village after Chenab river breached protection wall today.

He said that a few days ago 43 families were shifted, however, due to heavy rainfall since morning the situation deteriorated further as Chenab river breached protection wall and inundated the village.

Also, Sub Divisional Police Officer Akhnoor, Mohan Lal Sharma, stated that temporary shelters have been established for the relocated families.
