Meta removed Instagram and Facebook accounts of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Thursday following months of pressure from pro-Israel groups.
Khamenei's Persian-language account had more than 5.1 million followers, while his English-language account had more than 204,000.
“We have removed these accounts for repeatedly violating rules & Individuals policy," a Meta spokesperson stated.
“Under the policy, Meta removes organisations or individuals that proclaim a violent mission or are engaged in violence from its platforms,” he said.
Though Meta did not mention the Israel-Palestine war, the company has been under pressure to ban the leader ever since the war began on October 7.
