Kathua, Jan 29 — Police in Kathua district have arrested a woman for allegedly killing her husband whose decomposed body was found in a stream last October, officials said on Wednesday.
The victim, identified as Bittu Ram of Dhar Dugnoo village in Billawar, had gone missing on October 19, 2024, after leaving home for coaching classes. Two days later, his body was recovered stuffed inside a sack in a pond, triggering a murder investigation.
“After collecting evidence and questioning several suspects, the victim’s wife, Simro Devi, was identified as the prime accused and taken into custody,” a police spokesperson said.
During interrogation, the woman allegedly confessed to the crime. “She disclosed that frequent disputes arising out of an extramarital relationship had strained their marriage and led to the murder,” the spokesperson said, adding that she admitted to strangling her husband with a rope.
Police said material evidence connected to the offence was also recovered during the probe.
Under law, murder is punishable with death or life imprisonment, along with a fine, depending on the gravity of the case.
