Srinagar: Kashmir Farmers urged the J&K administration to ensure an adequate supply of fertilizers, especially urea as a shortage was reported at several places across the valley.

Urea is used as an agricultural fertilizer because of its high nitrogen content, which is an essential macronutrient for plant growth and development, but farmers have been facing a shortage, said a farmer from south Kashmir’s Shopian.

During the spring season, the demand for chemical fertilizer increases as it is used in agriculture for top dressing of crops, and also to fertilize apple and almond trees, he said.

Meanwhile, dealers also complained unavailability of urea by 60% stating that the government must take cognizance of the issue.

They said that there is some issue between the company and transporters on fare, due to which stand-off fertilizer has been restricted at Udhampur and was not getting supplied to Kashmir.

Farmers and dealers requested authorities to look into the matter at the earliest so that they won't suffer anymore.

Director Agriculture Mohammad Iqbal Choudhary said that the shortage is because of transport issues in Udhampur as the movement of empty trucks is restricted.

“We are on it and have taken up the issue with IGP traffic, he said.
