Srinagar: Unprecedented heatwave sweeps Kashmir as Srinagar, the capital city, recorded a scorching maximum temperature of 34.2°C on Tuesday which is a staggering 6.0°C above the normal average for this time of year. This temperature marks the second-highest ever recorded in September since the inception of the weather observatory in 1891. The previous record, dating back to September 1, 1970, stood at 33.8°C. The all-time record, established on September 18, 1934, remains at 35.0°C.
In south Kashmir; Qazigund, logged a maximum temperature of 33.2°C and today's temperature in Qazigund is the highest ever recorded since the observatory was established in 1956.
Subsequently, Kokernag also logged 32.0°C, marking the highest ever recorded since the observatory was set up in 1977 with Kulgam logging 31.1°C, Anantnag 32.8°C and Pulwama 31.8°C.
Similarly, north Kashmir’s Kupwara recorded 33.8°C, Baramulla at 32.3°C, Bandipora at 33.2°C,
Central Kashmir’s Budgam recorded 33.2°C, Shopian 3.8°C, and Sonamarg 27.5°C.
The metrological department has predicted a heatwave till 15 September.
