Ladakh: A cloudburst triggered a flash flood in Ladakh’s Gangles and other areas inundated several parts of Leh town and swept debris into the main market area, causing damage to buildings and disrupting normal life.

Fortunately, no loss of life has been reported thus far, according to officials on Saturday.

Late Friday night, the cloudburst unleashed its fury, leaving parts of Leh town submerged, an official said.

“The debris carried by the flood entered low-lying areas, resulting in damage to numerous buildings. Rescue and rehabilitation efforts are currently in progress, with focus on areas such as Khakshal, Sanker, Skampari, Chhubi, Zangsti, and the main market Gonpa Soma,” as stated by a police spokesperson.

Moreover, an upcoming program featuring the Dalai Lama in Leh had to be postponed, the officials confirmed.

The Gangles area suffered damage to shops, while the Chokhang Vihara area was left covered in debris, they added.

To tackle the aftermath, Ladakh Police has requested the assistance of the general public, civil societies and volunteers of various organisations to aid the police and civil administration.
