Srinagar: The relentless dry winter in Kashmir continues, with no snowfall observed in the upper regions as Gurez and Sinthan top roads, along with other mountainous highways, have defied typical winter conditions by remaining accessible.

According to the Meteorological Department, there's a forecasted chance of light rain/snow in "isolated higher reaches" on January 9. Subsequently, from January 10-14, generally dry weather is anticipated, with no significant weather activity expected until January 14.

As per details shared by MeT, Srinagar recorded a low of minus 4.3°C, slightly milder than the previous night.

In south Kashmir, Qazigund registered a minimum of minus 4.2°C, 1.1°C below normal. Pahalgam experienced a low of minus 5.3°C, 1.7°C above normal. Kokernag logged a minimum of minus 2.1°C, 1.9°C above normal.

In north Kashmir, Kupwara recorded a low of minus 5.0°C, 2.3°C below normal. Gulmarg, the renowned skiing resort, noted a low of minus 4.0°C, surprisingly 3.8°C above normal while marking the first instance of Gulmarg meadows being devoid of snow cover.

Jammu recorded a minimum of 4.3°C, 3.1°C below normal.

Pir Panchal’s Banihal marked a low of minus 1.2°C, while Chenab region’s Bhaderwah recorded 0.4°C.

The Kashmir valley is currently in the grip of 'Chillai-Kalan,' a 40-day harsh winter period lasting until January 30. This is followed by a 20-day-long period called 'Chillai-Khurd' between January 30 and February 19, and a 10-day-long period named 'Chillai-Bachha' (baby cold) occurring from February 20 to March 1.
