Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has announced that the holiday of Eid-ul-Adha will be observed on June 29-30, modifying a previous order.
According to an order, the government modified its earlier order and said that the holidays of Eid-ul-Adha will be on June 29 and June 30 instead of June 28 & June 29.
“In partial modification of Government Order No. 1596-JK(GAD) of 2022 dated 30.12.2022 and Government Order No. 1597-JK(GAD) of 2022 dated 30.12.2022, it is hereby ordered that the holiday on account of "Eid-ul-Azha" shall now be observed on 29th & 30h June, 2023 (Thursday & Friday) instead of 28th & 29th June, 2023 (Wednesday & Thursday) in Jammu & Kashmir,” the order reads.
Eid ul Adha falls on the tenth day of the Islamic calendar month of Dhu-al-Hijjah, the day is dependent on a legitimate sighting of the moon following the completion of the annual Holy Pilgrimage of Hajj, which is one of the five pillars of Islam.
Eid-ul-Adha commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's devotion to Allah SWT and his readiness to sacrifice his son, Ismail.
According to Islamic tradition, Allah replaced Ismail with a ram at the point of sacrifice, as a test of Prophet Ibrahim's willingness and commitment to obey his Lord's command. As such, Eid-ul-Adha is known as the festival of sacrifice.
Muslims do Qurbani (slaughtering an animal as a sacrifice to mark this occasion in remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice for Allah SWT.
The animal sacrifice comprises three days, from the 10th to the 12th of Dhu-al-Hijjah.
