Over 2,900 cases of communal violence cases were registered in India between 2017 and 2021, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai told Indian Parliament on Wednesday.

Notably, the parliament has begun its winter session on Wednesday till December 29. The session will have a total of 17 working days. The Centre's agenda for the winter session of Parliament includes 16 new bills.

Citing National Crime Records Bureau data, Rai said that a total of 378 cases of communal or religious rioting were registered in 2021, 857 in 2020, 438 in 2019, 512 in 2018, and 723 in 2017.

Many reports by international and Indian rights watchdogs stated that India has been witnessing the highest level of hostilities against religious minorities, particularly Muslims since 2014, the year BJP's Narendra Modi took oath as India’s Prime Minister.

In several states ruled by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the authorities have acted prejudicially against Muslims and other religious minorities in communal violence cases.
