Srinagar, May 4 — Fresh snowfall was recorded in the upper reaches of the Kashmir Valley on Monday, while rains lashed the plains, leading to the temporary closure of the Mughal Road for precautionary reasons.

Light snowfall was reported from higher-altitude areas, including the Zabarwan Range overlooking Srinagar, as well as Karnah, Sadhna Top, Sonamarg and Gulmarg. The snowfall led to a drop in temperatures across the region.

Officials said the Mughal Road, which connects Shopian with Rajouri and Poonch districts, was closed after snowfall at Peer Ki Gali caused slippery conditions.

District Traffic Inspector Poonch Manzoor Ahmad Kohli said the decision was taken as a safety measure. “Traffic movement has been stopped on Mughal Road due to fresh snowfall in upper reaches and slippery conditions. People are advised to avoid travel until the road becomes passable,” he said.

Authorities said the situation is being monitored and the road will be reopened once conditions improve.
