Srinagar, Feb 10 — Fresh snowfall was reported in the higher reaches of Kashmir on Tuesday, while rain lashed the plains of the Valley, officials said, as overcast conditions led to a rise in night temperatures.
Tourists at the Gulmarg ski resort in north Kashmir woke up to fresh snowfall in the early hours. “Snowfall occurred in the higher reaches, including Gulmarg, during the night and early morning,” a Meteorological Department official said.
Rain was reported from several plain areas of the Valley, the officials said, adding that cloudy skies continued to prevail. The MeT said the weather system responsible for the precipitation would continue to affect the region over the next 14 hours.
“The Valley is likely to witness intermittent rain in the plains and snowfall over higher reaches during this period,” the official said.
Cloudy skies led to a rise in minimum temperatures across Kashmir. Srinagar recorded a low of 3.3 degrees Celsius on Monday night, about 3.1 degrees above the seasonal average, officials said.
Gulmarg remained the coldest place in Kashmir with a minimum temperature of minus 3.4 degrees Celsius. Pahalgam, the south Kashmir resort, recorded a low of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius.
Among other places, Qazigund recorded a minimum temperature of 2.6 degrees Celsius, Kokernag minus 1.3 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara settled at zero degrees Celsius, the MeT said.
