A Muslim cleric (Imam) and one more person were injured after they were stabbed by a group of five persons while they were on their way to the mosque for salah (Islamic prayers) in Khandwa area of India’s Madhya Pradesh state.

The two injured Muslim men were identified as cleric (imam) Sheikh Uzefa and Mohammad Talha (20).

The incident took place late Sunday night when the assailants threw chili powder in the imam’s eyes and stabbed both in the chest, Maktoob Media reported.

Meanwhile, Khandwa Superintendent of Police Vivek Singh said that the minor boys have been detained.

“Uzefa is stable while Talha is out of danger. Both were injured near the chest,” PTI quoted him saying.

After the incident, several members of the Muslim community had held a protest at Padam police station, with independent corporator Ashafaque Sighad seeking immediate arrest of the accused.
