Cannot Normalise Hate Against India, Police On Students’ UAPA Arrest

Srinagar: As seven students from Sher-e-Kashmir University were arrested under UAPA; the Jammu and Kashmir Police issued a clarification on Tuesday stating they could not overlook the incident as a mere celebration because the aim is not just expressing personal sports preferences but normalizing open hatred against India, allegedly linked to separatism.

The police stressed that the sloganeering was intended to intimidate those (non-local students) who held pro-India sentiments and was seen as an attempt to normalize open hatred towards India.

“Such actions are often practised in the context of separatist and terrorist networks,” Police added.

Notably, Jammu and Kashmir Police booked seven students of Sher-e-Kashmir University’s veterinary sciences and animal husbandry department, over charges of 'celebrating' Australia's win over India in the finals of the recently concluded World Cup.

The students have been booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, Section 13, IPC Section 505, IPC Section 50.

Reportedly, non-local students recorded the alleged sloganeering incident and submitted the footage to the police.
