Merely, 100 kilometres from India's national capital, two Muslim men from Mewat village on the Rajasthan-Haryana border were allegedly abducted and charred to death by five suspected cow vigilantes on 17 February.

The deceased were identified as Junaid, 35 and Nasir, 25- both residents of Ghatmeeka village in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district.

The five men accused of 'kidnapping' Nasir and Junaid are Monu Manesar, Lokesh Singhla, Rink Saini, Anil and Srikant.

Monu Manesar is a member of the right-wing organisation Bajrang Dal. All five accused allegedly claim to be cow vigilantes.

The first information report (FIR) under the following sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused Lokesh, Rinku Saini, Srikant, and Monu Manesar under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 365 (abduction), 367 (kidnapping or abducting to subject a person to grievous hurt, slavery) and 368 (wrongful Confinement).

However, DSP Jagat Singh Loharu had told the media that it was not clear if they have been set ablaze or if it is an accident.

Meanwhile, locals of the Mewat village said that the village has already lost 50 Muslim men at the hands of the cow vigilantes.

A few days back, a Muslim man named Waris was allegedly killed n the same area. According to Waris’ family, he was lynched by Bajrang Dal members led by Monu Manesar who is also accused of the two fresh killings.

Haryana’s Mewat region has seen several incidents of mob violence and lynching in recent years with locals blaming impunity as the reason.
