At least 100 people were killed and more than 225 were injured after a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a mosque, located in the vicinity of a fortified compound that houses the provincial police headquarters in Peshawar city of Pakistan.

“So far, 100 bodies have been brought to Lady Reading Hospital,” Mohammad Asim, spokesperson of the concerned hospital said.

As per authorities, more than 90 percent of the casualties were police officials.

Initially, Sarbakaf Mohmand, a commander for the Pakistan Taliban (Tehreek-e-Taliban, or TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack on Twitter.

However, hours later, the group distanced itself from the bombing, stating it was not its policy to target mosques or religious places and did not address why a TTP commander had claimed the responsibility.
