Bundpur, April 27 —Authorities have detained several social media handlers for allegedly spreading false information about the encounter in Ajas, Bandipora, in which the brother of a Hizbul Mujahideen militant, who officials said was an overground worker (OGW), was killed on Friday, April 24, 2025.

Police said that the Bandipora Police received multiple reports about individuals circulating fabricated narratives on social media regarding the incident. “These false claims were said to have been shared via various social media accounts, prompting concerns over the security situation in the region.”

A police spokesperson noted, "The dissemination of such false information has posed a threat to national security and created the potential for law and order issues in the area."

However, in their statement, the police did not disclose the specific details of the false narrative being circulated by the social media handlers.

A criminal case has been filed against those responsible for spreading the fabricated narratives. “An FIR (No. 71/25) has been registered under Sections 152 BNS and 66(f) of the IT Act at Bandipora Police Station, with an investigation underway.”

"Several individuals have been apprehended for questioning, and further legal actions will be pursued based on the ongoing investigation," the police added.
