Snowfall, Rainfall Continues In Kashmir Valley

Srinagar: Parts of Kashmir continued to receive snowfall and rainfall late Monday night, with major highways blocked due to the accumulation of snow.

According to reports, it is currently snowing in central Kashmir's Sonamarg, North Kashmir's Gulmarg, Gurez, Verinag’s Shahbad Bala, main town Shopian, and Pir Ki Gali.

Other areas where snowfall has been recorded include Machil (2 ft), Sadhna Top (2.5 ft), Sonamarg (3-4 inches), Tulail Gurez (1.5 ft), Zojila Pass (1 ft), Gulmarg (2-3 inches), Pir Ki Gali (over 1 ft), Sinthan Top (over 1 ft), and Razdan Pass (over 1 ft).

In the last 24 hours, Srinagar has recorded rainfall of 38.6mm, while Qazigund and Pahalgam in South Kashmir have recorded precipitation of 64.4 mm and 51.7 mm respectively.

Kupwara in North Kashmir and Kokernag in the south have recorded rainfall of 4.2 mm and 43.6 mm respectively.

Director of the Meteorological Department (MeT), Mukhtar Ahmad, stated that the intensity of rains has decreased in several areas this evening, and there is a forecast of a dry spell from May 01 to May 05.

He added that the weather is expected to remain wet until late evening, with a light spell of rain expected tomorrow as well.

Regarding temperature, MeT said below-normal temporetures were logged across the region with Srinagar recording day temperature of 8.8°C and it was 14.0°C below normal for the capital.

Qazigund recorded a maximum of 9.0°C and it 13.4°C below normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.

Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 6.3°C and it was 13.5°C below normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded maximum of 9.4°C and it was 11.8°C below normal, the official said.

Kupwara town recorded maximum of 7.3°C and it was 15.8°C below normal there, the official said.

Gulmarg recorded maximum of 3.0°C and it was below normal by 10.6°C for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

Jammu recorded maximum of 24.0°C and it was below normal by 11.6°C.

 

Pir Panchal’s Banihal recorded a maximum of 9.2°C, and Chenab Valley’s Bhaderwah 12.2°C, he said.
