Srinagar: Plains of Kashmir, including Srinagar city, received snowfall on Tuesday morning, with higher reaches experiencing heavy snowfall as well.

According to data shared by the Meteorological Department (MeT), Gulmarg, Kashmir’s renowned ski resort, received 50 centimeters of snowfall during the last 48 hours and recorded a low temperature of minus 4.0°C on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday.

Moreover, in South Kashmir, Kulgam received nearly 3-4 inches of snowfall, while Shopian experienced 4-5 inches of snowfall, Kokernag received 1 inch of snowfall.

Parts of Central Kashmir including Srinagar District also recorded a snow accumulation of 1 inch.

Furthermore, the Meteorological Department (MeT) has forecasted intermittent light to moderate rain and snow across many areas of Jammu and Kashmir until Tuesday afternoon, with gradual improvement expected thereafter.

During the Chillai-Kalan (harshest winter) period, Kashmir experienced a prolonged dry spell. However, as the valley was later hit by western disturbances during Chillai Khurd (the mild cold period), experts have indicated that despite the recent snowfall, it is unlikely to persist for an extended duration. Consequently, glaciers are expected to have a reduced mass, impacting the volume of water streams.
