Srinagar, Feb 25 — A four-day wet spell began in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, bringing snowfall to higher reaches and rain to the plains, causing a drop in temperatures.
Famous destinations like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Dodhpathri received fresh snowfall, with Gulmarg and Sonamarg recording six inches, Dodhpathri five inches, and Daksum, Sinthan Top, and Peer Ki Gali four inches, independent weather forecaster Aadil Maqbool said.
The Meteorological Department (MeT) issued a yellow alert for February 26 across J&K and an orange alert for February 27.
“February 28 will see an orange alert in Jammu and a yellow alert in Kashmir. Isolated heavy rain and snowfall are expected, possibly impacting surface travel,” the Met advisory said.
Director MeT Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad said light to moderate rain and snow are expected until February 28, with isolated heavy snowfall in both Kashmir and Jammu (Pir Panchal & Chenab) divisions.
"The major snowfall of this season is expected between February 27 and 28," he added.
The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has warned of possible travel disruptions, including on key routes such as Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, Sadhna Pass, Razdan Pass, Sonmarg-Zojila Axis, Sinthan Top, and Mughal Road.
Farmers have been advised to suspend irrigation, while authorities have been told to prepare for snow clearance and emergency response.
