Salman Rushdie, the Mumbai-born author of the Booker Prize-winning novel "Midnight Children", was stabbed in an event in New York.
As per the initial reports, he was stabbed in the neck.
The attack happened when he was about to deliver a lecture on the stage at Chautauqua Institution in Western New York.
Rushdie, 75, had suffered years of death threats after he published a blasphemous book titled "The Satanic Verses" against the events of the last Islamic Prophet's journey.
A video posted online shows attendees rushing onto the stage immediately following the incident.
The attacker has not been identified and held by New York police, however, there are no reports available on Rushdie's condition.
