As a resident of Russia’s Volgograd city desecrated the holy Quran last month in front of a mosque, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the guilty will serve sentence in the Federation's predominantly Muslim regions.
Putin was quoted by Russia's TASS news agency stating: "They will serve their sentences, as stated by the Minister of Justice, in places of deprivation of liberty located in one of the regions of Russia with a predominantly Muslim population."
Putin’s comments were reportedly made during a meeting with military commissars – pro-Russian militaristic “journalists” and authors of telegram channels.
As per Russia's Investigative Committee, the accused confessed having acted in exchange for a $125 (10,000 ruble) payment from Ukraine's intelligence agencies.
Earlier this year, Russia denounced the burning of a copy of the Quran in the Swedish capital Stockholm by Rasmum Paludan, a leader of a far-right party, in a provocative move which also drew condemnation, calls for boycott and protests across the Muslim world.
