A public interest litigation (PIL) petition has been filed before the Supreme Court seeking directions to be issued to the Central government to render assistance to Indian citizens and students stranded in Ukraine in light of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine [Vishal Tiwari v. Union of India].

The plea by advocate Vishal Tiwari requested the Court to issue directions to the Central government to ensure that stranded Indian citizens get essential and emergency supplies like food, medical facilities, housing and lodging.

"Air space of Ukraine has been shut down and the Air India flight sent to Ukraine returned without evacuating any Indian Citizen. This has made the situation for the Stranded Indian Students and families worse," the petition said.

Indian persons/students are facing threats to their lives and properties, it added.

Many of these students are facing shortage of food and other essentials, the petitioner contended.

The plea also alleged that the Indian government failed to take steps to direct Indians to return from Ukraine "when the situation of the war (had) arisen 10 days before and the Indian Government was very well aware that the war like situation will arise in near future between Ukraine and Russia."

Interestingly, the plea also prayed that MBBS degree of the Indian Students who studied at Ukraine based universities through online mode should be recognized in India.

Earlier, The Himalayan Post reported over 200 Kashmiri students are stranded in Ukraine and why they couldn’t leave?
