Two Rohingya refugee camp leaders were killed by a mob in Bangalesh. The camp houses almost one million refugees which fled Myanmar in 2017.

They were identified as Maulvi Mohammad Yunus, 38, who is the head majhi of Camp 13 and Mohammad Anwar, 38, another majhi. “Majhi” is a term for a Rohingya camp leader.

While Yunus died on the spot, Anwar succumbed to injuries at a hospital.

Police said the Rohingya leaders were killed late on Saturday at Camp 13 and called it one of the worst attacks in recent months.

More than 700,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar since August 2017, crossing the border to Bangladesh when the Myanmar military launched a “clearance operation” against them following attacks by a rebel group. The security situation in Myanmar has worsened following a military takeover last year.

In August, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the UN rights chief that hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees living in overcrowded camps in Bangladesh must return home to Myanmar, from where they had fled waves of violent persecution.

To cater thousands of refugees, Bangladesh has started to move Rohingya refugees to a remote and flood-prone island in the Bay of Bengal, despite criticism from human rights and aid groups.
