Kulgam: A local militant and an OGW (Overground Worker) were killed in Redwani military operation in south Kashmir Kulgam district on Tuesday, according to the J&K police.

The local militant was identified as Basit Dar, a resident of Redwani, Kulgam, and the OGW as Faheem Ahmed Baba, son of Late Ghulam Hassan Baba, and a resident of Redwani, Payeen.

Addressing the press at the operation site on Tuesday, Inspector General of Police (IGP) V K Bhirdi said that a top Lashkar-e-Toiba (TRF) commander, Basit Dar, and an OGW described as a “Hybrid” were killed in an encounter in the Redwani Payeen area of Kulgam.

Police received intelligence about the presence of militants in the area, leading to the launch of a CASO (cordon and search operation) on Monday afternoon. However, intense firing resumed on Tuesday, resulting in two fatalities, he said.

“Basit was an A category militant carrying a bounty of Rs 10 lakh on his head by NIA. He was active since 2021 and involved in over 18 cases, including attacks on forces and minority members in Srinagar and South Kashmir,” the IGP said.

“Police will not allow anyone to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere and election festivity in Kashmir. We are alert and ready to foil all nefarious attempts,” he added.
