Srinagar: The holy month of Ramadan begins in Jammu and Kashmir as the moon has been sighted, J&K Grand Mufti (Islamic Jurist) announced on Saturday.

The moon have been sighted so Muslims will fast on 3 April (tomorrow) and the first Tarwih (Ramadan Evening prayers) will be offered on Saturday (Tonight), he said.

Moreover, the Mufti urged people of Kashmir to pray for peace and prosperity of Valley and asked to spend time in seeking repentance for sins and freedom from hellfire from Almighty Allah in the blessed month of Ramadan.

Muslims believe that Ramadan is the holy month in which the first verses of the holy Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) more than 1,400 years ago.

The fast entails abstinence from eating, drinking, smoking, and sexual relations from Dawn (Sahoor) till Dusk (Iftiyar) as fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, along with the Muslim declaration of faith (Tawheed), daily prayers (Salah), charity (Alms) and performing the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca if physically and financially capable.
