New Delhi, Jan 4 — India on Sunday voiced deep concern over the unfolding situation in Venezuela while refraining from condemning the United States’ military action that led to the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said New Delhi was “closely monitoring the evolving situation” and urged “all concerned” to resolve issues peacefully through dialogue to ensure regional stability.

“Recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation,” the MEA said.

US President Donald Trump described the operation as a decisive exercise of American power, stating that Maduro was in custody and that US authorities would oversee Venezuela until a “safe, proper and judicious transition” could be ensured.

The developments have raised alarm across Latin America. Colombia has reinforced its border with Venezuela amid concerns over a possible refugee influx, while Brazil called for calm but criticised the US action as potentially destabilising for the region.

Reports from Caracas described panic and confusion, with videos showing residents fleeing explosions and widespread power outages. Several provinces were reported to be facing communication disruptions, while shortages of food and fuel have compounded the crisis.

India also issued a travel advisory urging its nationals to avoid all non-essential travel to Venezuela. Indians currently in the country have been advised to exercise extreme caution, restrict movement, and remain in close contact with the Indian Embassy in Caracas.

The MEA said the Indian mission is in touch with members of the Indian community and “will continue to provide all possible assistance,” adding that nationals have been asked to register their contact details to facilitate emergency support if required.
