Govt Allows Friday Prayers At Jamia Masjid After 30 weeks

Srinagar: After almost 30 weeks of subsequent closures, the government of J&K allowed the congressional prayers at historic Jamia Masjid on Friday.

Over 3000 devotees participated in the mandatory congregational Friday prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid here in Old City area of Nowhatta where sermons were delivered after the gap of 30 straight weeks, a member of Ajumane Auqaf said.

Earlier, the Inspector General of Police IGP Vijay Kumar and Div Com Kashmir PK Pole visited the historic mosque of Srinagar, Jamia Masjid on Monday and said that the government is considering to reopen the mosque for Friday prayers.

People in large numbers came to the Mosque and a huge gathering was observed on the eve of Meraj-e-alam, Auqaf member said.

“All the arrangements were made in advance.”

The Friday sermon was given by Imam Hai Syed Ahmed Naqshbandi and while delivering sermons, he had asked for an immediate release of Jamia Masjid's head cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.

Notably, Mirwaiz is under house detention since August 05, 2019, when the government abrogated Article 370.
