New Delhi: The government of India announced on Saturday that it would postpone the implementation of Sub Section (2) of Section 106 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which introduces stricter penalties for those who flee the scene after causing a road crash, with up to 10 years imprisonment and a fine.

This decision follows protests by truck drivers against the increased penalties outlined in the new criminal code, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Under the new provisions, truck drivers involved in hit-and-run cases could face a jail term of up to 10 years or a fine of ₹7 lakh if they flee the accident spot or fail to report the incident to authorities.

Previously, under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the punishment for such offenses was a maximum of 2 years imprisonment.
