New Delhi, Jan 4, 2026 — The Government of India has directed social media platform X to remove illegal content, including material generated using its artificial intelligence tool Grok, and warned that offending accounts could face permanent suspension, amid reports of vulgar and unlawful posts circulating on the platform.

“Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will face the same consequences as uploading it directly,” X owner Elon Musk said in a post on the platform.

X’s Global Government Affairs team said the company removes unlawful content, permanently suspends offending accounts, and cooperates with law enforcement agencies. “Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content,” the statement said.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued a notice to X on January 2, directing the platform to act against obscene, vulgar and AI-generated unlawful content, and submit a detailed action-taken report within 72 hours.

According to officials, the notice followed public complaints and representations from lawmakers, including Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, over the misuse of Grok to generate explicit content, particularly targeting women.

X also reiterated its policy on adult content, stating that consensual material is permitted if properly labelled and not prominently displayed, in line with platform rules. Officials said the directive reflects growing concerns over the circulation of obscene and unlawful content on social media platforms.
