New Delhi, April 19 — Four people were killed and several others are believed to be trapped after a four-storey building collapsed in northeast Delhi’s Mustafabad early Saturday morning, officials said.

The Delhi Fire Services received a call about the incident at 2:50 a.m. and immediately dispatched nine fire tenders and rescue vehicles to Gali No. 1 in Shakti Vihar, Dayalpur.

“Rescue units reached the spot and began operations without delay,” a fire department official said.

Police at Dayalpur station were alerted around 3:02 a.m., a senior police officer noted. “Upon arrival, we found that a building owned by a man named Tehsin had collapsed. Preliminary reports suggest around 22 people were inside at the time,” the officer said.

So far, 14 people have been pulled from the debris and rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. Doctors there confirmed that four among them had succumbed to injuries, the officer added.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined Delhi Police in the ongoing rescue effort. Authorities have yet to confirm the number of people still trapped beneath the rubble.

A joint command post has been set up at the site to coordinate operations.

Officials are also assessing whether the structure was legally approved and if construction norms were followed.
