Death Toll Rises To 4800 In Turkiye-Syria Earthquakes

In the freezing weather; the death toll has risen to more than 4,800 people on Tuesday after four back-to-back earthquakes started jolting southern Turkiye and north-western Syria from the early hours of Monday morning, the rescuers are still scrambling under the rubble of crushed buildings on both sides of the border.

As per the Turkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) over 3,381 people have been killed and 20,426 others were injured. Also, More than 5,700 buildings had been toppled.

In Syria, 1,444 people were killed and 3,500 were injured, according to the Ministry of Health and the White Helmets rescue organization.

Several residential buildings were seen tumbling down when the first earthquake with magnitude 7.7 struck the south-eastern province of Kahramanmaras in Turkiye and piled more devastation on millions of Syrians already displaced by years of war.

It was followed by a second earthquake with almost the same magnitude and two more 5.6 magnitudes

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared seven days of national mourning, and Syria has appealed to the United Nations for help. As per reports, 45 countries across the world are helping Turkiye and some are sending aid to Syria.
