The death toll in the Turkey-Syria earthquakes has passed to 50,000, according to the latest figures from both countries.

While 44,218 people were killed in Turkey, 5,914 were killed in war-torn Syria.

The first earthquake of magnitude 7.7 hit both of the countries on February 6 and a second, measured 7.6 on the same day, since then more than 9,000 aftershocks were reported across the region.

Nearly 240,000 rescue workers, including volunteers, continue to scramble the rubble across some areas which were initially difficult to access so casualty numbers are rising as they progress. There have been no reports of survivors being rescued in recent days.

As to the Turkish government, more than 173,000 buildings collapsed with more than 1.9 million people taking refuge in temporary shelters or hotels and public facilities.
