Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II Dies In Scotland, India Announces State Mourning Day

Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kindom's longest-serving monarch, has died at the age of 96 at her Scottish estate in Balmoral after reigning for 70 years.

Her family gathered in Scotland after her health deteriorated earlier on Thursday, her appointments were also cancelled.

The Queen passed away in Scotland on Thursday afternoon and reports suggested that St. Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh will serve as the final resting place for her body.

After a few days, the casket may be open to the public for viewing, as per media reports.

Thousands of britshers surrounded her royal palace and mourned her death. Some placing placecards on the gate.  

She became queen on her father’s death in 1952 and with her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will be her successor.

In June 2022 Britain celebrated Elizabeth’s 70 years on the throne with the “Platinum Jubilee.

In September, she appointed Boris Johnson’s replacement as Prime Minister, Liz Truss, at Balmoral rather than at Buckingham Palace, where she had formally appointed more than a dozen prime ministers.

The Queen involvement in UK government revolves around many duties including appointing Prime Ministers and other ministers in the cabinet, opening each new session of Parliament, granting Royal Assent to legislation and approving Orders and Proclamations through the Privy Council. The Queen meets PM on a regular basis. The monarch is also Head of the British Armed Forces.

Her son, Britain's new King Charles III is expected to address the nation in a broadcast speech on September 9.

Prime Minister Liz Truss, who was appointed by the Queen on Tuesday, said the monarch was the rock on which modern Britain was built, who had "provided us with the stability and strength that we needed".

Speaking about the new King, she said: "We offer him our loyalty and devotion, just as his mother devoted so much, to so many, for so long.

World leaders mourned the queen’s death and offered condolences to the royal family with India announcing a state mourning day on 11 September.

"Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland passed away on 8th September 2022. As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the Government of India has decided that there will be one day State Mourning on September 11th throughout India," the government said in a press release.

Many Hong Kongers took to social media on Friday to mourn Queen Elizabeth II, a woman affectionately nicknamed "boss lady" among older residents in a city. It is pertinent to mention that Hong Kong was one of Britain's last colonies.
