Srinagar, Jan 19 — The body of one of the victims of the April 2024 boat crash in Srinagar was recovered from the Jhelum river on Monday after it surfaced near the city.
The deceased was identified as Showkat Ahmad Sheikh, who had remained untraced since the tragedy.
Local residents spotted the body in the river and retrieved it, according to reports.
The boat accident occurred in April last year when schoolchildren and their parents were crossing the river in a boat due to the absence of a functional footbridge in the Sonwar area. The footbridge has remained incomplete for over a decade, forcing residents to rely on unsafe river crossings.

At least eight people, most of them children, were killed in the incident, which remains one of the deadliest civilian tragedies in Srinagar in recent years.
