Srinagar: Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad has backed out from contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Kashmir’s Anantnag-Rajouri constituency, a day after his nomination.

On Wednesday, his party announced that he would not be contesting the Lok Sabha elections from the Anantnag-Rajouri seat in Jammu and Kashmir. Instead, the party is fielding Saleem Parrey as the new candidate.

Sources within the party said: “He wanted to serve people in the state assembly, so he would not run for the Anantnag-Rajouri seat.”

Azad was to contest against People’s Democratic Party chief Mehbooba Mufti. Polling in Jammu and Kashmir will take place in the first five phases between April 19 and May 20. The counting of votes will take place on June 4.
