At least 10 people were killed in a mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in Canada’s British Columbia province, with a second shooting reported at a nearby location, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said on Tuesday.

Police said the suspected shooter was later found dead with what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.

“At least 10 individuals including the suspect are confirmed deceased,” the RCMP said in a statement, adding that the situation is no longer considered an active threat.

According to the police, two people were airlifted to hospital with “serious or life-threatening injuries,” while at least 25 others were treated at local medical facilities.

“All remaining students and staff were safely evacuated,” the RCMP said, as investigators secured the school and surrounding areas.

British Columbia Premier David Eby described the incident as an “unimaginable tragedy” and said the provincial government would stand with the affected community.

“We will ensure every possible support for students, families, and community members during this devastating time,” Eby said.

Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended his planned trip to Europe following the attack, his office confirmed. In a statement, Carney said he was “devastated” by the “horrific” violence.

“My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this senseless act,” he said.

While mass shootings remain relatively rare in Canada, the country has witnessed several deadly attacks in recent years.

In April 2025, eleven people were killed and dozens injured when a man rammed an SUV into a crowd at a Filipino community festival in Vancouver. In September 2022, a stabbing spree across 13 locations in Saskatchewan’s James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon left 10 people dead and 18 injured. Earlier, in April 2020, a gunman posing as a police officer killed at least 16 people in Nova Scotia.

Authorities said the investigation into Tuesday’s shooting remains ongoing.
